I was inspired to start this project after some self-reflection & deep soul searching when I became increasingly overwhelmed in the endless feeds of meticulously curated imagery saturating our daily lives – depictions of flawless existences, impeccable fashion ensembles, & pristine living spaces. This relentless pressure to maintain an illusion of perfection, is a standard that feels increasingly unattainable & suffocating. Despite the invaluable role social media plays in fostering connections with family & friends dispersed around the world, it made me want to completely disconnect from social media & those around me.
Then I wondered, why? Why must we conform to an idealized facade, meticulously upheld at every moment of our lives, at the expense of our authenticity & individuality? Why can we not revel in the beauty of our imperfections, both offline & online, embracing our unique quirks & idiosyncrasies without reservation, & proclaim our stories, where we have been, honor what we’ve accomplished, rejoice in what we have persevere through. Just be – perfectly un-perfect.
After doing some research, I came across a portrait photographer in my mentor community doing the same & I was ready to be apart of it as well. Within a week of discovering her, & to validate my passion for this project even further, our church started a series entitled “I AM”, which tells us that everything we are, everything we build, everything we accomplish, comes from GOD.
So I seek to cultivate a portrait project that honors HIS creations. To celebrate our authenticity in all its manifestations. To recognize the inherent beauty in our collective diversity. To affirm that true magnificence lies not in flawlessness, but in the raw, unvarnished, unfiltered essence of human existence. A portrait experience to challenge the prevailing paradigm of perfection & instead champion the unadulterated celebration of our true selves, just as we are, just as I am.
